MBBS is the foundation for a career in clinical medicine. In India, the course runs for 4.5 years of academics followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship, regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Studying MBBS abroad
Government seats in India are limited and private college fees can exceed ₹1 crore. Many NEET-qualified students therefore choose universities abroad that meet NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021:
- Minimum 54 months of medical study, taught entirely in English
- A 12-month internship at the same foreign institution
- Eligibility to register as a medical practitioner in that country
- After returning, clearing the licensing exam (FMGE, to be replaced by NExT) and a further internship in India as prescribed by NMC
Eligibility criteria
- Minimum age 17 years by 31 December of the admission year
- 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
- 50% aggregate in PCB (40% SC/ST/OBC, 45% PwD)
- NEET-UG qualified
