Every foreign medical graduate who wants to practise in India must pass a licensing exam. Today that exam is FMGE, conducted by the National Board of Examinations. NMC has announced plans for the National Exit Test (NExT) to replace it.
What we know
- FMGE is a qualifying exam — you need the pass mark, not a rank.
- NExT is planned as a common exam for Indian and foreign graduates, serving as both a licence exam and the basis for postgraduate admissions.
- NExT implementation dates have been revised more than once, so students starting now should be ready for either format.
How to prepare, whichever exam you sit
- Take clinical subjects seriously from year 3. Both exams are heavily clinical.
- Use Indian standard textbooks alongside your university syllabus.
- Practise MCQs regularly rather than cramming in the final year.
