The number on a university brochure is rarely the number you will actually spend. Build your budget around these six categories.
1. Tuition
Charged per year in USD. Ask whether the rate is fixed for the full course or can change.
2. Hostel
Often included in packages for the first year. Check whether rooms are shared and what is included (heating, Wi-Fi, laundry).
3. Food
Indian mess plans are usually charged monthly or yearly. Self-cooking is cheaper but takes time away from study.
4. Visa, insurance and registration
Annual visa extensions, medical insurance and local registration are recurring costs.
5. Travel
One return trip home a year is typical. Book group tickets early.
6. Personal expenses
Books, winter clothing, phone plans and local travel — plan ₹5,000–8,000 a month.
Exchange rate risk
Fees are in USD, so a weaker rupee raises your cost. Keep a 10–15% buffer in your plan.
Education loans
Most public and private sector banks offer education loans for NMC-compliant foreign universities. The admission letter and fee structure are the key documents.
